Riding with Cassie

Cassie, Penny and I after the ride
Longhorn is one week from today!! Cassie came out to ride part of the Longhorn course today. We did 33 miles of the 56 mile course. Penny and John also came out from Houston to ride. Penny rode with us and John decided to do the entire course. We had a great ride and Cassie says she is feeling more confident about the race now. Cassie's husband James came with her and after the ride we went to the Hula Hut for lunch.

Flat Creek Winery

Jeff signed us up for the Flat Creek Winery wine club, twice a year we get newly released bottles of wine. They have a party for people to come pick up their wine, they had a BBQ dinner, a silent auction, tours of the new building they've almost finished, and of course wine tasting. Charlie, the winemaker was giving the tours and since we were with a very small group and the last tour of the night, he let us sample lots of wines from the tanks before they are put in the barrels. He also let us smell a juice, it hadn't fermented into wine yet, that smelled really good, like tropical fruits. I asked him if it would taste like it smells he said "yes, it would taste like it smells, but it hasn't fermented much yet, so it still has yeast and stuff in it, so if you drank it it would give you the shits" Ok, we won't taste that then!Jeff and I with Charlie the winemakerthe new private wine tasting room they are building

Views in Austin

These are views from the Town Lake TrailYou can see why I like to run there so much
This is the Barton Springs Pool. It is a natural spring that has been partially dammed to make a big swimming pool. It's about 1000 feet from one end to the other. It's 68 degrees year round and the bottom is natural rock and plants. There are some fish, crayfish, and an endangered species of salamander that live in the pool too.

Austin City Limits

Austin City Limits is a huge music festival in Austin. I took the bus to Zilker Park (since I knew it would be really hard and expensive to find parking) to check out the festivities. I didn't have tickets, tickets were at least $80, but I could hear many of the bands from outside the fences. I also hung out with Vincent and his girlfriend. I was there early on Friday and Vince said it gets really busy on Friday night and Saturday all day. Most people ride to ACL since parking is so tough. I have never seen so many bike racks set up and they were almost full on Friday morning.

Connor and Katie swam at Barton Springs

We took Connor and Katie swimming at Barton Springs this week. There is a place just outside the pool where we always see people with their dogs swimming.
The pool is just on the other side of the fence, you can see water flowing out from the pool.
These pictures are from another day, we didn't take the camera when we took Connor and Katie, we would have needed the underwater housing and we didn't want to carry it.They had a blast! They played fetch in the water with their frisbee until they could barely move! But of course they wanted to keep going. They were so tired as soon as they got in the truck they laid down and went to sleep.

Connor and Katie were really tired when we got home, they just slept the rest of the day.

I rode the Longhorn Half Iron course!

Ingrid came back from Houston to ride the Longhorn course with me on Saturday. We got out to the start a little after 7:00am and we were happily surprised to find so many other cyclists out there getting ready to ride. I'm guessing there were probably about 50 people out riding the course. I have been worrying about this bike course all summer! There were some steep hills, and the hill by the dam is steep and long, but most of the hills were not as bad as what we've done this summer in Chappell Hill and Burton. I was SO Happy to complete the course, it really makes me feel more confident about Longhorn in 2 weeks! Ingrid and I randomly said "WOO HOO we did the Longhorn course!!" all weekend long. After the ride Ingrid and I weren't even that tired so we went to the Old Pecan Street Festival. We had a great time and we ran into Vince who works with Jeff. Jeff, Jim, Ingrid, and I met up with David and Gillian to see Tropic Thunder (again) I think we all enjoyed it even more the second time. Jim and Jeff
Gillian and David
Jeff says they are all quoting the movie constantly at work now.Sunday, Ingrid and I did a long run around Town Lake, it's a great place to run, the lake is beautiful and you can see it pretty much the entire time you're running. We did 10 miles, my legs were a little sore when we started, after the ride on Sat. but this was my last long workout before Longhorn so I wanted to finish it no matter what and I am really happy I did! After the run, we picked Jeff up and went to the Hula Hut for lunch, YUM!

More Fun with Ingrid and Chris

Monday, Jeff worked during the day, Ingrid, Chris and I played games. In the evening we went to eat sushi, Gillian recommended a place on Congress called Kyoto, it was very good, except for the Uni (sea urchin). We got a big sushi plate and no one knew what the last peice was. Ingrid tried it and I didn't think she'd swallow it, she had a terrible look on her face, then Jeff took the entire peice and ate it. I have never seen him make that face before, it was awful! Ingrid said it tasted like "spoiled pee" YUCK! Jeff looked it up on the internet and found out that Uni (sea urchin sushi) is actually sea urchin gonads EEWW!! I'm so glad I didn't try it!

Yesterday Ingrid, Chris and I did a brick workout (kind of). We rode at the Veloway just south of Austin, it's a 3 mile loop just for biking, it's very winding, but it was a lot of fun. Chris and I did 6 laps (18 miles) and I think Ingrid did 7 (21 miles). Then we drove over to the Town Lake Trail and ran for 40 minutes. Ingrid and I were super hungry by the time we were done. We went to Veggie Heaven and had really yummy vegan food, it was Gillian's recommendation also.

We went to the Alamo Drafthouse to see Tropic Thunder which is insanely hilarious!
I had tons of fun, I got the blue butterfly bike jersey I've been wanting, Jeff ordered the sunglasses I want that he thought he couldn't get, and my new Infinit came, what an awesome day!

Ingrid and Chris's evacuation

Ok, I feel pretty bad writing about this since so many of my friends and my in-laws are miserable in Houston right now. Ok but miserable.

But... Ingrid and Chris and their dog Brady evacuated on Friday to our house. We have had SO much fun with them!
Ingrid and Chris
Brady, he is doing really well with Connor and Katie, especially considering that Connor is 8 1/2 years old and Brady is only 8 1/2 months old!
Ingrid and Katie
We really just watched the news all night Friday and Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon Ingrid and Chris heard that their house is ok, but no power. They were thinking about trying to go home on Sunday but Jeff and I (and everyone we/they talked to in Houston) talked them into staying until things get better. After we heard that all our friends and families are ok, we decided to just have some fun!
Saturday night we went to Motzart's for dessert.
Sunday morning Ingrid and I went for a bike ride on Parmer Lane.
We went to Home Slice pizzia and then to Barton Springs pool. Ingrid and I were super hungry after our ride. Home Slice is known for having the best pizzia in Austin.
Waiting to get a seat at Home Slice.
Ingrid really enjoyed her pizza!
After Barton Springs we went to Hey Cupcake.
Hey Cupcake is famous for having the best cupcakes in Austin. Their "store" is just an airstream trailer on South Congress and they close if/when they run out of cupcakes everyday.

Jeff's reaction when he found out there were still cupcakes!

Chris and Jeff really enjoyed their cupcakes!

Me eating my cupcake!

Ingrid and I loved these t-shirts! I swear I don't have a curly red ponytail, it's the lady behind me!
